Covington, CA – A former Catholic priest has pleaded guilty to a felony charge after he was busted having sex on a church altar with two dominatrices.
Former Father Travis Clark, 39, pleaded guilty to felony obscenity before 22nd Judicial District Judge Ellen Creel on Nov. 21 as part of a plea agreement, WVUE reported.
Creel gave the disgraced cleric a three-year suspended sentence, which he will serve on supervised probation, as well as a $1,000 fine.
Clark’s attorney, Michael Kennedy, said he was grateful that Creel suspended the sentence, but said it was unfair that prosecutors would not let his client plead to a misdemeanor charge like they allowed his co-defendants to do, WVUE reported.
The two dominatrices who starred in the pornographic film with the then-priest – 43-year-old Mindy Dixon and 30-year-old Melissa Cheng – pleaded guilty to misdemeanor institutional vandalism in July, according to the news outlet.
They were sentenced to two years of probation.
Kennedy also noted that Clark had already paid the Archdiocese of New Orleans $8,000 in restitution to replace the altar, WVUE reported.
Archbishop Gregory Aymond was furious over the incident, according to the news outlet.
Aymond declared the altar desecrated and ordered it to be burned and had a new altar brought into the church, WVUE reported.
Clark, who was ordained in 2013, was defrocked and removed from Catholic ministry one day after his arrest, according to the New York Post.
“Now that the criminal proceedings involving Travis Clark have concluded, the Archdiocese of New Orleans will move forward with the process to have him formally laicized,” the archdiocese said in a statement on Tuesday, according to the Catholic News Agency.
“The necessary information will be sent to the Vatican where in consultation with Vatican officials, the Holy Father will make the final determination on Clark’s laicization,” the statement read.
The incident occurred at Saints Peter and Paul Catholic Church on the night of Oct. 1, 2020, WVUE reported.
A passerby told the Pearl River Police Department they noticed lights on inside the church and looked through the window.
The witness reported seeing the priest with two women who were wearing high heels and corsets, WVUE.
The trio was engaging in various sexual acts on the church’s altar, according to court documents.
They were recording the scene using a camera mounted on a nearby tripod.
Officers responded to the church and arrested Clark, Cheng, and Dixon, WVUE reported.
Police said they also seized two recording devices, portable stage lights, and various sex toys.
“His obscene behavior was deplorable,” Aymond said after Clark’s arrest, according to WVUE. “His desecration of the altar in the church was demonic. And I am infuriated by his actions.”
Kennedy said his client is unlikely “to find himself in a similar situation ever again.”
“Wherever life takes Mr. Clark from here, I hope it finds him well and able to put this fully behind him,” he added, according to WVUE.
Clark told WDSU that there were a lot of factors behind what occurred.
“In that time there was the height of the pandemic, priests are called to a life of celibacy, so there’s issues of loneliness and wanting human interaction,” he said.
Clark said he is relieved the court matter has been adjudicated.
“I can move on with my life,” he told WDSU.
