Springfield, MO – Springfield PD released an open “thank you” to a pre-teen who took down a burglary suspect fleeing from officers.
According to Springfield PD, the incident started Friday night when officers received a call to a church in the 2700 block of N. National for a burglary that had just occurred.
When officers arrived, they found a 50-year-old male suspect who had stolen at least two weedeaters.
When the suspect saw the police, he dropped the weedeaters and fled on his bicycle.
Sergeant Friend pursued the suspect in his vehicle and then got out to chase the suspect on foot when the suspect started riding between houses.
The suspect was on a bike, and may have gotten away, except a group of 10-12 year old kids were playing basketball nearby.
The group of kids saw the suspect fleeing from Sergeant Friend, and one of them knew what he had to do.
The kid threw the basketball across the roadway, hitting the suspect, and knocking him off of his bike.
The officers were able to take the suspect into custody and book him into jail for the burglary.
On Saturday, the department took to Facebook to thank the youth who took down the burglary suspect saying, “HECK YES! We have to give major props to some young gentlemen who really helped us out last night!”
The young hero was not identified.
Would you help an officer take down a fleeing suspect? We’d like to hear from you. Please let us know in the comments.
