Pierce County Deputy Murdered, One Suspect Captured Dead, One On Run

There were two suspects in the shooting of a Pierce County Sheriff's Deputy.

Pierce County, WA – A Pierce County Sheriff’s deputy was killed after he was shot just after 11:30 p.m. Sunday night.

The incident started as a 911 call for a residential burglary at a home off of 200th St. E near 46th Ave.

During the 911 call, dispatchers could hear screaming and a scuffle taking place.

A deputy arrived on scene and began to pursue a black male suspect. During the pursuit, shots were fired and the deputy was hit.

The deputy was transported to St. Joseph Medical Center in critical condition. The Sheriff’s Department announced at 2:10 a.m. that the deputy had succumbed to his injuries.

When deputies arrived on scene of the shooting, they found a dead white male suspect. It’s not clear at this time if the suspect was killed in a gunfight with the murdered deputy or was otherwise killed.

The black male killer is still on the loose and a manhunt remains underway.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the family of the murdered deputy and all of the officers involved in the manhunt.

UPDATE: The murdered deputy has been identified as 34-year-old Daniel McCartney.
