Sandy MaloneWest Palm Beach, FL – A woman who was arrested after she drove through two U.S. Secret Service barricades in front of President Donald Trump’s Mar-A-Lago resort on Friday refused to go before the judge on Saturday morning.
Palm Beach County Circuit Judge Ted S. Booras rescheduled the bail hearing to Monday morning for Hannah Roemhild, an opera singer from Middletown, Connecticut, the Palm Beach Post reported.
Booras ordered Roemhild brought to court “as long as they can [transport her to the jail] safely and not damage my deputies.”
“I don’t want them or her in danger if it’s not safe,” the judge added, according to the Palm Beach Post.
The incident for which the 30-year-old Roemhild is behind bars began at about 11:30 a.m. on Jan. 31 when a Florida Highway Patrol trooper responded to a call at The Breakers hotel.
Palm Beach County Sheriff Ric Bradshaw said the suspect was behaving “irrationally” and was “doing some kind of dance” on top of her rental Jeep, the Palm Beach Post reported.
Sheriff Bradshaw said the trooper smashed the window of the SUV to try and stop the woman from driving away.
But Roemhild fled and led the trooper on a chase that blew through two U.S. Secret Service checkpoints that had been set up ahead of President Trump’s arrival at his resort expected later in the day, the Palm Beach Post reported.
Fearing that the woman was carrying a bomb or might run people over, Secret Service officers and Palm Beach sheriff’s deputies opened fire on the SUV.
“We didn’t know if it was someone with a car bomb or someone who was going to hit as many pedestrians as possible,” Sheriff Bradshaw told reporters at a press conference.
Several bullets struck the vehicle’s windshield, back and side windows, but Roemhild was not hit and continued her escape as authorities lost sight of her, the Palm Beach Post reported.
A license-plate reader near Palm Beach International Airport picked up the rental Jeep and troopers located her at the Studio 6 hotel nearby.
“We alerted FHP; they had units in the area and actually spotted the vehicle again,” Sheriff Bradshaw said. “That trooper followed that vehicle to a local motel where the driver jumped out and was trying to flee to a room. The trooper did a great job, tackled her, and took her into custody there.”
Nobody was injured in the bizarre chase of the officer-involved shooting that resulted from it.
There were two women in the vehicle when Roemhild was caught at the airport hotel and both were detained, Heavy reported.
The sheriff said the suspect must have picked up the second woman after she crashed through the gates at Mar-A-Lago.
Police said Roemhild had no criminal history in Florida or her home state of Connecticut, the Palm Beach Post reported.
A dive into Roemhild’s social media showed that she is not in fact a fan of President Trump, according to Heavy.
She posted pictures of people in pink hats at the Women’s March with the caption “Not my president. Love trumps hate.”
Roemhild, a registered Democrat, has also posted memes and gifs that ridicule the President, Heavy reported.
However, authorities do not believe that the incident was terror related.
Roemhild, who was in town to perform at a show, is currently facing two counts of aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer, WSVN reported.
Additional charges against Roemhild are expected in connection with the incident.
