One Week After Getting Gun, 23-Year-Old Woman Shoots Robber Attacking Her

Jonathan Peace attacked a small woman in Raleigh in the middle of the day, but he picked the wrong victim.

Raleigh, NC – A 23-year-old woman was forced to defend her life just one week after buying a gun.

Jonathan Peace was shot in the chest after he attempted to rob Morgen Matthews at about 3 p.m.

Peace, 28, was charged with common law robbery and was taken to the hospital. Police said that Peace’s injuries were not life threatening, according to WRAL-TV.

“Matthews fired her weapon to stop him from attacking her and stayed on the scene until police arrived,” the police department said in a news release, according to The News & Observer.

Witnesses said that after she fired her gun, she dropped it. Someone inside a nearby restaurant picked up the gun and turned it over to the police. The person who called 911 said that Matthews was “violently accosted” before she fired her gun.

“Holy s**t! Shots fired!” the 911 caller said, according to The News & Observer. “The victim is down – one gunshot wound to the chest.”

The shooting happened on a busy pedestrian area in the downtown. After Peace was shot, patrons came out of a nearby restaurant to try to give him aid.

Dwayne Taylor said he was the boyfriend of Matthews, according to The News & Observer. He said that Matthews texted him Thursday afternoon and told him she shot someone.

“I just shot someone,” she texted.

“What???” Taylor texted back.

“Come down here please,” Matthews reportedly wrote, according to The News & Observer. “I just got attacked.”

Taylor described his girlfriend as a “petite” woman who just got a gun last week, according to The News & Observer.

On Friday, people who were in that part of the downtown said they supported Matthews.

“You need to protect yourself,” one unidentified man told WRAL. “And if that’s your avenue of doing it, then that’s what you need to do.”
