Officer Stabbed In Neck While Walking From Police Headquarters After Shift

Oakland, CA – An off-duty Oakland police officer was attacked and stabbed in the neck as they left police headquarters after a shift on Thursday.

The incident occurred at about 5:37 p.m. on April 25 as the officer was walking to their car in the 600-block of Jefferson street, the East Bay Times reported.

Police said a woman approached the officer and began stabbing them without warning.

A waste management employee saw the officer get attacked and called police for help, KPIX reported.

Oakland Police Officer Johnna Watson said other officers responded to the scene just blocks from police headquarters immediately, according to the East Bay Times.

“Fortunately we had officers in the area who were able to quickly transport our off-duty officer to a local hospital where they are listed in stable condition,” Officer Watson told KTVU. “Where the officer sustained the injury is a key location. Fortunately it is not life-threatening.”

They put the wounded officer in a patrol car for the trip to Highland Hospital.

Other officers set up a perimeter along Washington and Jefferson Streets between 6th and 7th Avenues and quickly apprehended the suspect in the stabbing, the East Bay Times reported.

The officer’s attacker was arrested just a few steps away from where she stabbed the officer.

She was arrested but police said they still have no motive for the attack, the East Bay Times reported.

Oakland police Chief Anne E. Kirkpatrick and her command staff joined officers at the hospital to show their support for the wounded officer on Thursday evening.

The officer was in stable condition on Friday morning, the East Bay Times reported.

Police have not yet released the name or gender of the wounded officer because next of kin were still being notified, KTVU reported.

Detectives were trying to determine what led up to the attack and have characterized the incident as an assault with a deadly weapon.

Police said the officer was in plain clothes after finishing work and they do not know if the attack was targeted because the victim is a police officer.
