AidenPittsburgh, PA – The man whom police believe murdered New Kensington Police Officer Brian Shaw was arrested early Tuesday, authorities said.
Rahmael Holt, 29, was charged with murder of a law enforcement officer, murder of the first degree, illegal firearm possession, and carrying a firearm without a license.
Holt surrendered at about 5 a.m. Tuesday morning to a SWAT team that had surrounded a home in Hazelwood, where he was hiding, WPXI reported.
Several other individuals – including Holt’s mother – face charges related to aiding Holt while he was on the run, TribLIVE reported.
The manhunt for Holt began on Friday night, after he leapt from a vehicle at a police traffic stop in New Kensington, resulting in a foot pursuit by Officer Shaw.
A surveillance footage showed Holt running to a nearby parking lot, where he shot 25-year-old Officer Shaw in the torso, the Washington Post reported.
Holt then fled the scene.
Officer Shaw used his radio to tell dispatch he had been shot. He died less than an hour later.
The Jeep Grand Cherokee that was involved in the initial traffic stop was found abandoned about two hours after the incident.
Investigators said the suspected driver, Tavon Harper, 27, was arrested on Sunday, TribLIVE reported.
Police questioned Holt’s mother, Sherry Holt, on three occasions beginning on Sunday.
They said Sherry Holt changed her story multiple times, and ultimately admitted that she saw her son on Friday night, after Officer Shaw had been shot.
Sherry Holt was arrested on Monday night, and charged with hindering apprehension.
On Monday, investigators went to the Duquesne home of Holt’s cousin, Marcel Mason, who was also wanted for a probation violation, police said.
Mason and his girlfriend, Aysa Benson, initially denied having seen Holt “in weeks,” TribLIVE reported.
Benson later confessed that Holt had come to her residence on Saturday afternoon. She said Mason gave Holt clean clothing, and that she then drove Holt to a bus stop in downtown Pittsburgh.
Benson was charged with two counts of hindering apprehension, and Mason was charged with a single count of hindering apprehension.
Holt had an extensive criminal history before he murdered Officer Shaw.
He was arrested in Wilkinsburg, and charged with possession of an unlicensed firearm in 2007.
Later that year, Holt was arrested again on the same charge, convicted, and sentenced to serve two years of probation, according to court documents.
A jury acquitted him of a charge of possession of an unlicensed gun in 2008.
In 2011, Holt pleaded guilty to resisting arrest, tampering with evidence, disorderly conduct, and simple assault for an incident that happened in Wilkinsburg, according to WPXI. He was sentenced to two years of probation.
