AndrewBlakeNew York, New York – A New York City Police Department detective was arrested Tuesday for burning the clothes of her police officer husband who she believed was cheating on her.
Detective Marissa Sorocco was arrested Wednesday and brought to Nassau County Police Department headquarters. She faces charges of arson in the fifth degree and criminal mischief, according to the New York Post.
Her husband, Paul Sorocco, is a Nassau County officer and a former NYPD officer.
Sources told the New York Post that Detective Marissa Sorocco burned her husband’s clothes at their home in Plainview. New York Daily News reports that the fire was set in a closet within the house.
The fire department responded to the home for the fire just after 10:15 a.m., but the fire was largely extinguished by the time they arrived.
New York Daily News reports that the firefighters found smoldering clothes but no structural damage.
Prosecutors have said that the couple’s two children were in the house at the time the fire was set inside, but Det. Sorocco’s lawyer disputed that.
She appeared at court Wednesday wearing yoga pants, a black leather jacket and thigh-high black boots, and accompanied by her father.
At court, a protection order was issued against Det. Sorroco which prevents her from returning home. The prosecutor also requested a psychiatric evaluation.
Sources said the motive is that she thought her husband was having an affair. She has been suspended from her job and is awaiting arraignment.
Det. Sorocco is a third-grade detective and worked at One Police Plaza in the office of Crime Control Strategies.
