HollyMatkinLos Gatos, CA – San Francisco 49ers linebacker Reuben Foster was arrested for domestic violence, threats, and possession of an assault weapon charges on Sunday morning, police said.
This was Foster’s second arrest in less than a month, the San Francisco Chronicle reported.
Foster was one of eight 49ers players who chose to kneel for the national anthem during the 2017 football season, in protest of police brutality, 247 Sports reported.
According to The Mercury News, Los Gatos-Monte Sereno police were dispatched to a home at 9:15 a.m. due to a report of a domestic disturbance.
An unnamed woman told officers that she and Foster, 23, had gotten into a heated argument, and that Foster ultimately assaulted her. The parties have a long-term relationship with each other, police said.
Officers located an “assault weapon” in the home during their investigation.
Foster was booked into the Santa Clara County Jail, and was released on $75,000 bond on at approximately 6:35 p.m., the San Francisco Gate reported.
“The San Francisco 49ers organization is aware of the report regarding Reuben Foster,” the team said in a statement on Sunday, according to The Washington Post. “We take matters of this nature seriously and are gathering all pertinent information.”
Foster’s latest arrest came just over three weeks after he was charged with marijuana possession in Tuscaloosa, Alabama on Jan. 12.
The inside linebacker also failed a drug test at the 2017 NFL scouting combine, when he provided a diluted urine sample, the San Francisco Chronicle reported. He was ultimately terminated from the combine after he got into an argument with a hospital employee.
“He’s got to stay clean,” 49ers general manager John Lynch told Niners Nation in January. “We all know how special a player he can be when he’s right. So he’s got to figure out how to stay healthy and stay out of trouble, but we believe he will do that.”
According to The Washington Post, Foster was already at risk of having to forfeit $2.5 million in salary guarantees if he ended up being fined for having violated the NFL’s substance abuse policies. His latest arrest could make him subject to discipline for personal conduct policy violations.
Foster was widely lauded as a top-10 talent going into the 2017 draft, but concerns arose due to injury and character issues, the NFL reported.
He was the 31st overall pick in the draft, and started 10 games for the 49ers last season.
