New York City Passes Chicago For Number Of Weekend Shootings

New York, NY – New York City experienced more shootings than Chicago this past weekend as gun violence continues to surge in the Big Apple.

A total of 31 people were wounded in the 28 separate shooting incidents that took place in New York from Friday through Sunday, FOX News reported.

Six people were murdered, according to the news outlet.

Police said 15 victims were wounded by gunfire on Saturday alone.

One of the people who were wounded was a former New York police officer who had served seven years with the department, WPIX reported.

The 30-year-old former officer was shot in the stomach by a stray bullet, according to investigators.

During the same dates one year ago, five people were shot in four shootings in New York City, FOX News reported.

Two people were murdered during the same period.

The number of shootings that took place in New York City over the weekend surpassed those of Chicago – an area notorious for gun violence.

Twenty-one Chicagoans were wounded and four more were killed between Friday night and early Monday morning, according to the Chicago Sun-Times.

The weekend prior, 22 people were wounded and five were killed.

New York Sergeant Benevolent Association (SBA) President Ed Mullins blamed the New York City Council and Mayor Bill de Blasio for the city’s surging crime rate in a series of tweets on Sunday.

“Mayor DeBlasio has allocated 30 Million Dollars to bring tourism to NYC. Welcome to the city of violence,” one tweet read. “Shootings and Homicides [plague] NYC and the numbers aren’t final.”

According to the New York Police Benevolent Association (PBA), shootings were up 257 percent last week versus the same timeframe one year ago, FOX News reported.

The number of people shot in New York so far this year climbed to 416 as of Sunday, which is a 76 percent increase from last year.

Nine more murders have occurred in 2021 than during the same period in 2020, FOX News reported.
