AndrewBlakeAustin, TX – The mother of a University of Texas – Austin student who was murdered in a knife attack has been lobbying to outlaw Bowie-style hunting knives.
Lori Brown’s son Harrison Brown was murdered on campus in May of 2017 with a Bowie-style knife, KXAN reported
After he was stabbed, Brown gave the phone to another student to call his mother for him, but he died before she got a chance to talk to him, according to KXAN.
In the wake of her son’s death, Lori became an anti-knife activist.
Bowie knives like the one 21-year-old Kendrix White used to stab Harrison Brown to death were already illegal carry in public in Texas at the time of his murder, KXAN reported.
However, a month after Harrison Brown died, Texas House Bill 1935 was signed into law. The new law permitted Bowie knives to be carried in more places around the state, although they remained illegal on all school campuses.
“In my opinion, [HB 1935] totally disregards Harrison and how he died and his murder. It really did feel like a slap in the face,” Lori Brown told KXAN.
So she drove 235 miles to Austin on April 13 to talk with members of Texas Governor Greg Abbott’s administration about her concerns.
“I have nothing to lose. I will not take ‘no’ for an answer,” Lori Brown said. “If something like [the stabbing attack] happens again, I just don’t know what I would do.”
“Bottom line: It should have never happened that day. It should not have happened. [White] should have not been allowed to have an illegal knife on him and use it to murder somebody,” she said.
White was arrested for fatally stabbing Harrison Brown, and stabbing and injuring three other people, according to the Austin American-Statesman. He has been charged with murder and aggravated assault.
