Clinton, OK – A middle school Algebra teacher who had sex with her student before and after she took him to the teacher walkout at the state capitol was arrested on Sunday.
The Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation (OSBI) reported that Keri Hoffman, 35, turned herself in to police and confessed to having sex with a 15-year-old student of hers from Clinton Middle School multiple times since March 30, KFOR reported.
The teacher, who has been working in the Clinton school district since 2011, arrived at the Clinton Police Department with her husband to make her confession.
That’s a highly unusual move for these types of crimes, Jessica Brown, a public information officer for OSBI, told Newsweek.
Hoffman admitted to having consensual sex with the boy numerous times in her car, and inside her father’s detached garage, the New York Daily News reported.
She also told police that she had sex with the teenage boy twice on the day that teachers held a statewide walkout to pressure lawmakers to give more money to public education, according to the New York Daily News.
Hoffman said they had sex before she took the boy to the state capitol with her, and again that evening after the rally, before she dropped him back off at home, police said.
She was in charge of taking a group of students to the capitol that day for the protest, Newsweek reported.
“The victim was part of that group,” an Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation spokesman said in a statement. “Hoffman picked him up first and dropped him off last, having sex with him each time.”
The math teacher explained to the Clinton police that she had been communicating with her student via Facebook messenger to make plans for their sexual encounters, KFOR reported.
Clinton Public Schools have declined to comment on the case, and Hoffman’s educator page on the school district’s website had been removed, according to Newsweek.
Hoffman also posted a confession on her social media accounts in which she said she’d “lost her way.”
“I do not understand how I got here but I have turned myself in to face my consequences, because it is the right thing to do… I know I have left you at a place of dismay and with no closure and I apologize for that,” she wrote, according to Newsweek.
Hoffman has been charged with facilitating sexual conduct or communication with a minor by use of technology, two counts of second degree rape, and pattern of criminal offenses, KFOR reported.
The charges carry a possible sentence of 40 years, but Brown told Newsweek that it was more likely Hoffman would get 15 years in prison and big fine.
She was booked into the Custer County Jail, and originally, her bond was set at $130,000, the Newsweek reported. However, it has since been reduced to $30,000.
