Maryland State Trooper Stabbed, Fights Back And Takes Out Attacker

A Maryland State Trooper was stabbed on Monday morning, and then he fatally shot the suspect who stabbed him.

Westminster, MD – A Maryland state trooper fatally shot a Carroll County man who had just stabbed him on Monday morning.

Maryland State Police said that the trooper was investigating reports of a man slashing tires at about 9 a.m. on March 11 when he encountered a man with a knife, WTOP reported.

The trooper approached the 34-year-old man in the intersection of Washington Road and Stoner Avenue in Westminster, and the two had an altercation.

Police said the man stabbed the state trooper, and then the trooper pulled his weapon and shot the suspect, the Baltimore Sun reported.

The suspect was transported to Carroll Hospital Center where he was pronounced dead. Police said a knife was found at the scene.

Maryland State Police Spokesman Greg Shipley said the state trooper was airlifted to University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore for treatment, the Baltimore Sun reported.

Shipley said the “prognosis is good” for the trooper, a six-year veteran of the Maryland State Police who is assigned to the Westminster barracks, the Baltimore Sun reported.

He said the preliminary investigation indicated the trooper had been responding to a call about vehicle damage when a second victim approached him and said he’d had his tires slashed.

The second victim described the suspect to the trooper as a white man carrying a blade, according to the Baltimore Sun.

Westminster police released a statement on Monday that said they had been investigating a series of incidents of malicious damage to vehicles on the east side of the city.

They said there had been at least 15 reports since Sunday, the Baltimore Sun reported.

Police said the damage reported included broken windshield wipers, mirrors, and antennas, and slashed tires.

“Police believe these incidents may potentially be related to an ongoing investigation currently being conducted by Maryland state police just outside of city limits,” Westminster police said in the statement.

The Maryland State Police homicide unit was investigating the incident, the Baltimore Sun reported.
