Man Shoots Cop In Face With BB Gun, Cop Shoots Man With Real Bullets

An Iowa City police officer responding to a shoplifting complaint on Monday was shot in the face with a BB gun.

Iowa City, IA – An Iowa City police officer was shot multiple times in the face with a BB gun on Monday afternoon.

Police said the incident began at about 3:29 p.m. on July 29 when an officer responded to a shoplifting complaint from a business in the strip mall at 11 Highway 1 W, The Gazette reported.

The shoplifting suspect was found nearby the business at the intersection of Riverside Drive and Rupert Road, just south of Highway 6, KCRG reported.

When the officer approached, the suspect opened fire on him, according to The Gazette.

The officer was shot in the face multiple times, KCRG reported.

He returned fire with his duty weapon and shot the suspect, according to The Gazette.

The suspect’s weapon was later determined to be a BB gun.

The officer and the suspect were both transported to the hospital by ambulance and were reportedly in stable condition, according to KCRG.

The Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation is investigating the officer-involved shooting as is protocol for that state.
