Fuasko Petrus Murdered On Highlands High School Track
Even though this hero octogenarian went down fighting, she died from the brutal sexual assault and beating.
The incident occurred just after 6 AM at the Highlands High School track. The two women were doing what they do most days of the week – walking around the track for exercise. They had walked this track countless times together.
However, this time it was different. A man, a complete stranger to both women, jumped out from behind a backstop of a baseball field, according to CBS Sacramento. His first target was the younger woman, whose name has not been released.
Sergeant Tony Turnbull of the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Department said Fusako Petrus came her friend’s aid when she started screaming.
When the older woman got to her, the attacker “turned his attention” to her, and attacked her. He said that the suspect sexually assaulted the older woman, and “caused injuries that led to her death.”
According to The Sacramento Bee, a witness called 911 to report seeing a man attack the two women.
Deputies said that the attacker had one motive: sexual assault. The suspect murdered the elderly woman with two weapons: his fists and his feet.
As part of the investigation, officers set up a perimeter, and police officers and K9s searched the neighborhood but did not locate the suspect at that time. He was last seen fleeing over a fence on Walerga Road.
An 18-year-old man was arrested Thursday afternoon in an unrelated brutal assault on an elderly woman in the area. He has been named as a person of interest in this incident. His name has not been released, and his arrest came about 12 hours after Wednesday morning’s violent attack. The second incident occurred about 12 miles from the first.
Fusako Petrus was pronounced dead at the school. The second victim received injuries to her torso, face, and head, and was transported to a local hospital for treatment. She has since been released.
There was a large police presence at the school on Thursday as faculty and students. The normal school routine was restricted, with students released from class only to change classes. Escorts went with students who used restrooms. Classes that were held in rooms near the track were held in a different location.
The Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office described how Fusako Petrus died a hero:
A family friend said that Fusako died “protecting her friend.” She said that she saw her friend being choked and started hitting him with her walking stick, which allowed her friend to escape. But it allowed the attacker to turn all of his anger on Fusako.
Anyone who was walking or driving during the time that the attack occurred is asked to call the Sheriff’s Department.
Our thoughts and prayers are with the family of the hero Fusako Petrus, who saved her friend’s life.
Every law enforcement officer is the area will work tirelessly to ensure that the killer is captured and brought to justice.
