AndrewBlakeMarysville, CA – A man who shot a police K9 in the neck during a pursuit was fatally shot by police officers Friday.
Police identified Jonathan Alexander, 26, as the suspect who was killed, according to KCRA-TV.
The Wheatland Police Department pulled over Alexander for driving under the influence at about 2:30 a.m. April 6.
Police witnessed Alexander driving at 90 mph and turned off his lights before eventually pulling over.
The Yuba County Sheriff’s Department said that there was a strong smell of liquor coming from the vehicle.
Alexander gave his name to the police officer but then became uncooperative, police said.
Alexander then drove off and police chased him. Police set up spike strips and Alexander drove over them but it didn’t slow the car down.
It wasn’t until Alexander went over a second set of spike strips that his car came to a stop, police said.
Police said that Alexander would not obey commands to surrender or exit the vehicle.
The Yuba County Sheriff’s Department then used their K9. At that point, Alexander pulled out a gun and shot the K9 in the neck.
Police then responded by shooting Alexander, according to the Yuba County Sheriff’s Department.
Police removed Alexander from the car and gave him CPR until the emergency medical personnel arrived. Alexander died at the scene.
The Yuba County Sheriff’s Department said that the bullet that hit K9 Glock came out of the other side of the dog’s neck.
Glock was taken to the vet for treatment and police said the K9 is recovering at home.
No officers were hit by gunfire.
The Yuba County Sheriff’s Office, Wheatland Police Department, Marysville Police Department and California Highway Patrol were all involved in the incident, according to KCRA.
