SandyMaloneLouisville, KY – A police officer was shot in the head on Thursday afternoon, and another officer was injured, in an exchange of gunfire that left one suspect dead.
David James, President of Louisville Metro Council, told WDRB that the wounded officer, who was shot in the head, is a narcotics detective.
James told WHAS that the officer was “grazed in the head by a bullet,” but that he was awake and talking when he was transported to the hospital.
He said two suspects were also shot, and told WDRB that city policy dictated that body camera footage taken during a fatal police shooting must be released within 24 hours.
The shooting was first reported just after 1:30 p.m., and took place at the intersection of Derby Avenue and Carey Avenue, near the intersection of Bardstown Road and Fegenbush Lane.
Law enforcement sources told WAVE that Louisville Metro Police Department officers were conducting a narcotics investigation when the suspect opened fire.
The injured officers were transported to University Hospital with an escort.
The suspect was pronounced dead at the scene. Another suspect was transported to the hospital.
There were additional gunshot victims, WAVE reported, but police had not released any information about how many people were shot, or their conditions.
A WHAS reporter tweeted that the Federal Bureau of Investigation was on the scene.
