Odessa, TX – An active shooter is dead after killing five people, wounding 21 more, including multiple police officers.
Odessa Police Department Chief Michael Gerke told reporters that the incident started at around 3:17 p.m. when a Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) trooper initiated a traffic stop on a gold Honda near Odessa.
The vehicle stopped and the occupant opened fire, shooting the DPS trooper.
The suspect then drove off, shooting random people as he drove west.
After shooting multiple victims, the suspect hijacked a USPS mail truck. The suspect then drove around shooting people from the mail truck.
Officers were able to confront the suspect at the Cinergy movie theater in Midland. A gunfight broke out and a Midland police officer and an Odessa police officer were shot.
The suspect was destroyed in the gunfight.
Video of the gunfight was recorded by a bystander and posted online:
The gunman has not been identified, but Chief Gerke advised that he was a white male in his mid-30s.
There were initial reports of two shooters, but that is believed to be due to confusion from the shooter switching vehicles.
Only one gunman is believed to have been involved at this time.
The conditions of the wounded officers have not been released at this time.
