New Castle County, DE – A gunman opened fire on New Castle County officers from a home on Route 2 in the Newark area at around 1:30 pm Tuesday.
Officers have been taking cover behind their vehicles in the highway. No officers are reported to have been hit.
There’s no word if officers returned fire or if the suspect may have been shot.
The scene is still active with a large number of police officers responding and continuing to stay behind cover, according to ABC 6.
Route 2 is closed and the Newark Farmers Market is on lockdown.
UPDATE: This started as a welfare check and the suspect opened fire on arriving officers. The suspect is now in custody.
