Caldwell, ID – The sheriff of Canyon County said the federal government’s lax border control policies have caused a crisis situation in his jurisdiction due to a surge in drug overdoses and gang activity.
“This is absolutely ridiculous to think this border is secure, that we’re safe in our communities. We are not,” Canyon County Sheriff Kieran Donahue told FOX News on Wednesday. “We are on the cusp of complete collapse.”
Sheriff Donahue said cartels from south of the U.S. border have anchored themselves in communities throughout the nation and are wreaking havoc on citizens and law enforcement personnel and resources.
“There is not a day or night goes by that we’re not dealing with someone associated with the Mexican cartels, at least in our community and communities throughout the state of Idaho,” he told FOX News. “We are at war with the cartels.”
Multiple Canyon County deputies have been hospitalized due to fentanyl exposure over the past year, according to the sheriff, and drug overdoses in the community have hit “crisis level.”
“We’re at a crisis stage, quite frankly,” Sheriff Donahue told FOX News. “We have never seen the numbers of seizures and the amounts of any drug, including methamphetamine, like we’re seeing in fentanyl. And of course, we’re still dealing with the methamphetamine crisis we’ve been in for years.”
The sheriff said the cartels’ power has even reached his own family.
“My family’s been threatened by these gangs, by the cartel membership,” he said, referring to an incident that occurred during his six-year stint on a Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) task force.
“They tried to kidnap my daughter years ago. She was 16 years old,” the sheriff explained. “Thankfully, that case got unraveled before it actually happened.”
Sheriff Donahue said Department of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas’ claims that the U.S. southern border is secure are nothing short of “idiotic,” FOX News reported.
“If he believes that, then he’s an idiot, in my opinion,” he said, adding that the Biden administration is “hiding from the truth.”
“There is no question that it is unsecure – it’s not safe,” Sheriff Donahue continued. “[The cartels] literally control that border.”
The sheriff declared that the drug cartels are America’s “number one front.”
“[The cartels are] coming to us and ravaging our communities,” Sheriff Donahue told FOX News. “Were no exception. They’re assigned here, they’re deployed here. They operate from here from safehouses, drop houses, intersecting with our local gangs and other nefarious criminals…it’s all run by the cartels.”
