Champigny-sur-Marne, France – A female officer and a male duty captain were savagely attacked and beaten by gang members in a Paris suburb on early Monday morning.
According to the Daily Mail, members of the gang recorded the assault on the female officer, and then shared the video on social media.
The officer and captain, whose names were not disclosed, responded to a report of a disturbance outside of a residence where a New Year’s Eve party was taking place, the Daily Mirror reported.
When a large number of people were turned away from the party, a fight erupted in the street, but the group decided to make the officer and captain the new focus of their brutal attack when the pair arrived on scene.
The video showed the officer on the ground, as she tried to cover her head while the crowd kicked and punched her.
The crowd cheered and whooped as they repeatedly stomped on the woman.
“The evening has really gone wrong! Goodness! Poor copper!” a woman said using “Paris street slang,” according to the Daily Mail.
“The captain had tried to defend the pair using a tear gas canister, but was badly beaten up,” a source told the Daily Mail. “At one stage, he produced his service weapon, but did not get a shot off.”
The crowd also flipped the police cruiser onto its roof, and the video showed members of the group as they further destroyed the vehicle.
The attackers then fled into a nearby neighborhood.
Additional officers arrived at the scene and rushed the pair to a local medical facility.
Both suffered concussions and various injuries, but will survive, the Daily Mail reported.
“The female officer has been written off work for at least a week, while the captain will be off for at least 10 days,” a source told the Daily Mail.
President Emmanuel Macron decried the assault on Monday.
“Those guilty of the cowardly and criminal lynching of police doing their duty on the night of December 31st will be found and punished,” he said, according to the Daily Mirror. “Honor to the police and full support to all the agents attack in such a low-level fashion.”
French Interior Minister Gerard Collomb also vowed to seek justice for the officer and captain.
“Everything is done to ensure that the cowardly perpetrators of these unspeakable acts are apprehended and sentenced. To attack our security forces is to attack our Republic,” he told the Daily Mail.
