Sedalia, IN – Carrol County Sheriff’s Office (CCSO) Deputy Noah Rainey and Jail Deputy Dane Northcutt died in the line of duty Jan. 29 after their patrol car crashed as they were responding to help another officer.
The deputies were traveling along State Road 26 on their way to assist a Rossville deputy town marshal with a pursuit when their patrol vehicle left the east side of the highway and slammed into a pole, WTHR reported.
Additional law enforcement officers responding to the call for help with the pursuit came upon the crash shortly after 1:30 a.m.
Deputy Rainey and Jail Deputy Northcutt were both pronounced dead at the scene, WTHR reported.
Indiana State Police (ISP) said Deputy Rainey was on-duty at the time of the wreck, and that Jail Deputy Northcutt was on a ride-along.
The ISP is handling the ongoing investigation into the deadly collision, WTHR reported.
Deputy Rainey served with the Tippecanoe County Sheriff’s Office for three years and spent one year with the Indiana Department of Corrections prior to joining the CCSO four years ago, according to the Officer Down Memorial Page.
He leaves behind his wife and children, the Indiana State Police Alliance said in a Facebook post.
Over 40 law enforcement vehicles from agencies across Central Indiana escorted Jail Deputy Northcutt’s body to a funeral home Sunday morning, Clinton County Sheriff Rich Kelly said in a Facebook post.
Dozens of first responders escorted Deputy Rainey’s body to Delphi one day earlier.
“We lost two brothers this morning,” Sheriff Kelly said in a statement to WTHR. “I ask for our community to wrap their arms around the Carroll County Sheriff’s Office. Please pray for our first responders and for the families of these 2 men. Our Chaplains were on scene with us and will continue to be available throughout this process. May Deputy Rainey and Officer Northcutt rest in eternal peace.”
Members of the community have left flowers and other tokens on a patrol car parked outside the CCSO in honor of the fallen deputies, WXIN reported.
