Hero Down: Winn Parish Deputy Clayton Horne Dies While Serving Overseas

Winn Parish Sheriff's Office Deputy Clayton Horne died while serving as a U.S. Army Reserve military police officer.

Riyadh, Saudi Arabia – Winn Parish Sheriff’s Office (WPSO) Deputy Clayton Horne died on Aug. 17 while serving as a U.S. Army Reserve military police officer in Saudi Arabia.

Deputy Horne, 23, died of injuries he sustained after he fell from a tower, Winn Parish Sheriff Cranford Jordan said in a Facebook post later that night.

“Clayton was an excellent deputy and I was looking forward to him completing his tour and returning to work at the sheriff’s office,” Sheriff Jordan wrote. “Please keep his family and friends in your prayers during this most difficult time.”

The exact circumstances of Deputy Horne’s death remain under investigation, but the incident did occur while Deputy Horne was on duty, 200th Military Police Command Major Valerie M. Palacios told the Army Times.

Deputy Horne joined WCSO after graduating from the police academy in November of 2018, Stars and Stripes reported.

He was expected to return to the sheriff’s office in October, according to KSLA.

“It is with a heavy heart that we mourn the loss of Spc. Clayton Horne, of Atlanta, La., who died serving his country in Saudi Arabia while supporting Operation Inherent Resolve,” Louisiana Governor John Bel Edwards said in a statement, according to KSLA.

“Spc. Horne made the ultimate sacrifice on behalf of all of us, and the people of our nation and our state owe him and his family an enormous debt of gratitude,” Edwards continued. “We can never thank him enough for his commitment to our state and our country. Please join me and Donna in prayer for this young man’s family, friends and fellow soldiers during this difficult time.”

Deputy Horne enlisted in the Army Reserve in 2015, and was deployed in January.

He was awarded the Army Service Ribbon and the National Defense Service Medal during his service.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with the Horne family during this tragic event,” Maj. Palacios told KSLA. “Specialist Horne was a professional and was committed to the mission. We are grateful for his service.”

Our thoughts and prayers are with the family of Winn Parish Sheriff’s Office Deputy Clayton Horne, both blood and blue. Thank you for your service.

Rest easy, hero. We’ll hold the line from here.
