Lynwood, CA – Whittier Police Department (WPD) Officer Lanell Whitfield died in a motorcycle crash while off duty on Saturday afternoon, according to police.

The 25-year-old officer was traveling along Martin Luther King Boulevard when the collision occurred at approximately 3:32 p.m. on June 4, LA Weekly reported.

It is unclear whether or not Officer Whitfield struck another object during the wreck.

A caller told the 911 dispatcher that the rider was on the ground that that his motorcycle had burst into flames, LA Weekly reported.

Officer Whitfield suffered massive injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.

The investigation into the exact cause of the fatal crash remained ongoing.

WPD Chief Aviv Bar released a statement on Monday regarding the loss of the young officer.

“On Saturday afternoon we received the devastating news that our partner and friend, Officer Lanell Whitfield, was killed in an off-duty traffic collision in the city of Lynwood,” Chief Bar wrote. “This tragic and sudden loss has been very difficult for our law enforcement family.”

Officer Whitfield served the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Office for two years prior to joining the WPD in October of 2021.

“He was a bright and kind young man, full of energy and desire to help others,” Chief Bar said. “In a very short time, Lanell developed a strong bond with his fellow police officers and with the community that he enjoyed serving each day, a testament to his character, commitment, and friendly personality. He truly loved and enjoyed being a police officer.”

Officer Whitfield leaves behind his parents and siblings.

A fundraising campaign established to help his family in the wake of their loss has raised over $8,800 so far.

“As we grieve this terrible loss, our thoughts and prayers are with Lanell’s family, his many law enforcement partners and friends, and the community he protected,” Chief Bar said.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the family of Whittier Police Department Officer Lanell Whitfield, both blood and blue. Thank you for your service.

Rest easy, hero. We’ll hold the line from here.
