Hero Down: Vernal City Police Cpl. Troy Davis Dies After Collapsing While Mountain Biking

Red Fleet Reservoir, UT – Vernal City Police Department (VCPD) Corporal Troy Davis died on July 12 while mountain biking with his family and a local high school mountain biking team.

The 50-year-old corporal served as a school resource officer at two local schools, according to a fundraising page established to help his family in the wake of their loss.

Cpl. Davis was mountain biking with his wife, two of his high-school aged sons, and members of the Uintah High School mountain biking team when he suddenly collapsed.

“Family and friends performed life saving measures for several minutes on scene until emergency personnel arrived,” the Uintah County Sheriff’s Office (UCSO) said in a Facebook post on July 15.

Cpl. Davis was rushed to Ashley Regional Medical Center, where he passed away from a heart condition, according to the UCSO.

“He was surrounded by his family at the time of his death,” the sheriff’s office said.

Cpl. Davis served the VCPD for over 22 years, according to his obituary.

“As a school resource officer at both of our town’s middle schools, he was known to be fair and kind,” the fundraising page read. “He put in the time and effort to connect with students and to have a positive impact in their lives.”

The UCSO said Cpl. Davis’ death is a “devastating loss” to the community, as well as to his family and the entire law enforcement family.

“Every capacity he ever served in, both personally and professionally, he did it well,” the UCSO said. “Thank you Troy for your example and professionalism. You will be missed.”

Cpl. Davis leaves behind his wife, Mariel, six children, and two grandchildren, according to his obituary.

He is also survived by his parents and siblings.

Cpl. Davis was laid to rest on Saturday.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the family of Vernal City Police Department Corporal Troy Davis, both blood and blue. Thank you for your service.

Rest easy, hero. We’ll hold the line from here.
