OfficerBlueCorporal Marcellus was diagnosed with brain cancer in October 2016, according to Burlington Free Press.
In a statement from Wednesday, Colonel Matthew T. Birmingham, director of the Vermont State Police, said, “Corporal Marcellus was a dedicated member of the state police for many years and he was taken from us far too soon.”
He added, “He served the people of Vermont honorably and will be greatly missed by every member of the state police. Our thoughts and prayers are with the entire Marcellus family during this time of difficulty.”
Williston firefighter Prescott Nadeau said Corporal Marcellus was “always helpful” on calls and “quick with a joke to lighten the mood”, according to NBC5. Shortly after his diagnosis of an inoperable brain tumor, the VSP decided to help, and part of the money raised at the Kyle Young Football Tournament was given to the trooper and his family.
Corporal Marcellus was a 14-year veteran of the Vermont State Police. He was a native of Piseco, New York, who lived most recently in Fairfax. He had been based in St. Albans, but had recently been based in Williston.
Vermont State Police spokesman Scott Waterman said Corporal Marcellus’ last call was responding to and investigating a crash in Williston where five teenagers were killed on October 8, 2016.
Corporal Marcellus is survived by his wife and infant child.
