Salt Lake City, UT – University of Utah Police Department (UUPD) Sergeant Kory Newbold died in the line of duty on Wednesday after suffering a medical emergency.
The 59-year-old sergeant’s exact cause of death was not released.
“We are devastated that U Police Sergeant Kory Newbold passed away today from a medical condition while on duty,” the department tweeted that afternoon. “He was a beloved member of our team and had served the U community since 2014. Our hearts and thoughts are with his family and friends during this difficult time.”
Sgt. Newbold served the West Valley Police Department (WVPD) for over 20 years prior to joining the UUPD seven years ago, according to his obituary.
He retired from the WVPD at the rank of lieutenant.
Sgt. Newbold also successfully completed the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) academy in 2009.
He was a decorated officer with two medals of valor, according to his obituary.
“Kory was one of a kind and one of the most easy-going guys I’ve ever known,” Utah Fraternal Order of Police (FOP) President Brent Jax said, according to KSL. “Details aren’t known yet but prayers to brothers and sisters with both agencies that knew and worked with Kory…and others that spent time in WV as part of task force assignments that worked with him.”
“Profession lost a good one today,” Jax added.
Sgt. Newbold leaves behind his wife of 33 years, Lori, as well as his three daughters, Whitney, Brandy, and Tiffany, according to his obituary.
He is also survived by his five grandchildren, as well as his father, Boyd, and his sister, Vicki.
