Hero Down: U.S. DHS FPS K9 Lyka Lukas Dies After Falling From Roof While Searching For Drone

Jackson, MS – United States Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Federal Protective Service (FPS) K9 Lyka Lukas died in the line of duty on Dec. 28, after falling from a rooftop during a search.

The tragic incident occurred at the Dr. A.H. McCoy Federal Building as K9 Lyka Lukas and her handler were investigating a report that an unmanned drone had landed on top of the building, according to the Officer Down Memorial Page.

The four-year-old Dutch shepherd became startled during the search and broke away from her handler before she fell off of the building’s roof.

K9 Lyka Lukas suffered fatal injuries in the fall, according to the Officer Down Memorial Page.

She served FPS for 28 months.

“You are a hero, my condolences to your handler, fellow officers, department, community and all who called you friend,” Working Dogs Oregon Executive Director Darin Campbell wrote in a memorial post. “Your heroism will never be forgotten. Run in the [lush]…fields of heaven reserved for those pups who served to protect mankind from themselves!”

FPS Dispatcher Brad Smith said K9 Lyka Lukas will be “dearly missed” by everyone who had the pleasure of working with her.

“You were an amazing partner to your handler, an outstanding servant to your community, and may God bring your handler healing and strength during this difficult time,” Smith wrote in a memorial tribute. “Thank you for your service and may you rest in peace.”

Our thoughts and prayers are with the United States Department of Homeland Security Federal Protective Service in the loss of K9 Lyka Lukas.
