Colville, WA – U.S. Customs and Border Patrol K9 Jackie was killed in the line of duty when the patrol vehicle she was riding in hit black ice and flipped over an embankment.
The wreck occurred at about 2 a.m. on Dec. 29 while K9 Jackie and her agent partner were patrolling Highway 395 northwest of Coleville, according to a press release from U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP).
CBP said the patrol vehicle lost traction on the black ice and went over an embankment and then proceeded to roll over multiple times.
First responders used the Jaws of Life to extract K9 Jackie’s human partner from the wreckage of the patrol vehicle and transport them to the hospital via ambulance with multiple serious injuries.
But K9 Jackie died at the scene, according to the CBP press release.
“Thank you to all the rescuers and medical staff involved and please remember K-9 Jackie and the agent in your thoughts and prayers,” Acting CBP Chief Patrol Agent David BeMiller said. “We understand the risks that we take as well as our K-9 partners; it is never easy when we lose a partner.”
K9 Jackie had served her agency since April of 2015.
Our thoughts and prayers are with U.S. Customs and Border Protection and its agents in the loss of K9 Jackie.
