Hero Down: Turlock Police Department K9 Varick Succumbs To Cancer

Turlock Police Department K9 Varick received his final radio call on Wednesday.

Turlock, CA – Turlock Police Department (TPD) K9 Varick died on Wednesday, following a six-month battle with inoperable cancer.

K9 Varick’s cancerous jawline tumor grew significantly after his cancer diagnosis six months ago, negatively affecting his health and quality of life, the TPD said in a Facebook post on Wednesday.

The department posted a touching video that showed K9 Varick as he made his final visit to TPD so his fellow officers could say their goodbyes.

“We love you Varick, you’re a good boy,” a TPD message said.

K9 Varick, a Czechoslovakian-born sable German Shepherd/Belgian Malinois mix, received a final radio call as he and his handler, Turlock Police Officer Nim Khamo, drove away from the station.

“K9 Varick, as we bid you farewell today, your brothers and sisters in blue want to thank you for your service. We will miss your barking and howling on the radio, covering your partner, and your visits to dispatch for a treat or two…or three…or four,” the dispatcher said in the final call.

“It’s been an honor working with you, Varick. We all love you, and will forever cherish the memories we’ve made with you,” the call continued.

“Thank you for your dedicated service and commitment to the Turlock community,” the dispatcher concluded, as her voice began to break. “Turlock units, K9 Varick is 10-7 for the final time, over the rainbow bridge.”

The six-year-old K9 served alongside Officer Khamo for three years, according to an April interview with KXTV.

“It’s a loss of a member of our police department – he just has a lot more hair than most of us,” Officer Khamo told the news outlet. “My family, my son, my wife – we’re all affected by it…We’re going to miss him dearly.”

Our thoughts and prayers are with the Turlock Police Department and Officer Khamo in the loss of K9 Varick.
