Hero Down: Town of Kent Police Department K9 Maverick Dies After Suffering Medical Emergency

Kent, NY – Town of Kent Police Department (KPD) K9 Maverick died on March 19 after suffering a sudden medical emergency, according to his department.

The seven-year-old German Shepherd/Belgian Malinois-mix “passed away peacefully with his handler and family” by his side, the KPD said in a press release the following day.

K9 Maverick’s exact cause of death was not immediately released.

The dually-certified narcotics detection and patrol K9 joined the KPD in 2017 and spent his entire career serving alongside his human partner, KPD Sergeant Corey Ashe.

In addition to his regular duties, K9 Maverick was also a member of the Putnam County Emergency Response Team.

The KPD said Sgt. Ashe and K9 Maverick bonded instantly and that the beloved K9 went on to have “a successful and decorated career.”

“K9 Maverick made a considerable impact to our community not only while on patrol, but at community events as well,” the police department said. “K9 Maverick’s work ethic was matched only by his joy. When he wasn’t on patrol, he loved being with his family. The Town of Kent Police Department will miss him dearly and be forever grateful for his service.”

More than 500 people offered their condolences to the KPD and Sgt. Ashe in response to the department’s announcement.

“Thank you for your service K9 Maverick may you rest in peace,” one message read. “K9 Maverick along with Sergeant Ashe, his family and the entire Kent PD are in our thoughts and prayers.”

Others described the fallen K9 as “magnificent” and said he was an asset to the community he served.

“So sorry for your loss!” another person wrote. “Thank you for your service, Maverick! Rest in peace sweet boy! Prayers and condolences to the Ashe family and the Kent Police department.”

Our thoughts and prayers are with the Town of Kent Police Department and Sgt. Ashe in the loss of K9 Maverick.
