Holly MatkinGeorge West, TX – Texas Department of Criminal Justice (TDCJ) Corrections Officer Amanda De Leon died in the line of duty on March 20 after a single-vehicle crash.
Corrections Officer De Leon, 30, was traveling from the Lopez State Jail to the Connally Unit as part of a work assignment when the fatal collision occurred, according to the Officer Down Memorial Page.
She was alone in a 2013 Chevrolet Colorado traveling northbound on State Highway 281 at approximately 4:25 p.m. when her vehicle veered off of the roadway, the Alice Echo News Journal reported.
Corrections Officer De Leon overcorrected, which caused her vehicle to roll multiple times, Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) Sergeant Nathan Brandley told the paper.
She was not wearing a seatbelt and was ejected from the vehicle during the crash.
Corrections Officer De Leon, a six-year veteran of the TDCJ, died from her injuries at the scene, the Alice Echo News Journal reported.
The fatal collision occurred during a period of rainfall, according to the Officer Down Memorial Page.
Corrections Officer De Leon was a hardworking, dedicated employee who “loved her job,” according to her obituary.
She leaves behind her parents, Mario and Norma, as well as her brother, Mario.
Corrections Officer De Leon is also survived by many aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.
