Indianapolis police discovered the body of Southport Police Detective Sergeant Jason Swanson early Monday morning.

Indianapolis, IN – Southport Police Department (SPD) Detective Sergeant Jason Swanson was found dead outside his vehicle early Monday morning.

Sgt. Swanson, 43, was working a part-time security job when he passed away, the SPD said, according to WISH.

Indianapolis Metropolitan police officers discovered his body near his personal vehicle in the area of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Street and 21st Street at approximately 3:30 a.m., The Indianapolis Star reported.

The cause of his sudden death is unknown, and an autopsy is scheduled to take place on Tuesday.

Officers at the scene said that Sgt. Swanson passed away from “natural” causes, WXIN reported.

“As you can imagine, we are devastated to learn of the passing of Southport Detective Sergeant Jason Swanson,” the agency tweeted on Monday morning. “At this time, we ask that you keep his family in your thoughts and prayers. The loss of a brother is never easy.”

Sgt. Swanson joined the SPD in January of 2015, Southport Police Chief Tom Vaughn told The Indianapolis Star.

He previously served as a medic with the Indianapolis Fire Department from 2005 until 2013, Chief Vaughn added.

Sgt. Swanson leaves behind his wife, Charlotte, who is also a Southport police officer, WTHR reported.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the family of Southport Police Department Detective Sergeant Jason Swanson, both blood and blue. Thank you for your service.
