Hero Down: Sheffield PD Officer John Christian Nix Found Dead Of Self-Inflicted Gunshot

Sheffield, AL – Sheffield Police Department (SPD) Officer John Christian Nix died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound on May 22, according to his department.

Sheffield police were dispatched to the 26-year-old officer’s home and found his body, SPD Chief Ricky Terry said in a press release on May 23.

“It is with a very heavy heart that the Sheffield Police Department is sad to report the passing of Officer John Christian Nix,” Chief Terry wrote. “He was an outstanding Police Officer and was loved by his fellow Officers and the community.

Officer Nix joined the SPD on July 26, 2017.

“We are very thankful for his years of service,” Chief Terry said. “There are just not enough words to express how saddened we are. We are asking for everyone to pray for the Sheffield Police Department and Officer Nix’s family.”

Officer Nix became a law enforcement officer because he wanted to help those in need, according to his obituary.

“Christian had an incredible ability to make every person he encountered laugh,” the tribute read. “He would do whatever it took to turn someone’s day around. He was kind and he loved those around him deeply, in a way that made sure you knew you were loved, even if he didn’t say it.”

Officer Nix leaves behind his parents and siblings.

He is also survived by his grandparents, aunt, uncle, and cousins.

Officer Nix will be laid to rest on May 26.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the family of Sheffield Police Department Officer John Christian Nix, both blood and blue. Thank you for your service.

Rest easy, hero. We’ll hold the line from here.
