Savage, MN – Savage Police Department (SPD) Officer Robert “Rob” Calvin died on March 30 following a nearly 18-month battle against cancer.
The 37-year-old officer passed away peacefully, surrounded by his family, his department said in a Facebook post later that morning.
Officer Calvin joined SPD as a community service officer in February of 2012.
He became a police officer in December of the same year.
During his nine years with the SPD, Officer Calvin served as a field training officer, crime scene technician, property room technician, was a member of the agency’s Predatory Offender Registration Team, and assisted with the citizen’s academy, according to his department.
Officer Calvin was named Officer of the Year in 2018, and was the recipient of the SPD’s Lifesaving Award on five separate occasions.
He also enjoyed in participating in community outreach events, such as the “Freezing for a Reason” Polar Plunge and the Special Olympics Law Enforcement Torch Run.
“Robert’s true commitment and dedication to family, the police department and the community of Savage was evident by his professionalism, kindness, respect, integrity and community engagement,” the SPD said.
“Robert was a true mentor to those who joined our police department family. He was knowledgeable, optimistic, friendly and always gave sound advice. He had a wonderful personality and was highly respected and admired by all of his colleagues,” the agency noted.
He leaves behind his wife of five years, Amanda, as well as his 10-year-old daughter and his one-month-old son, Shakopee Valley News reported.
Officer Calvin is also survived by his parents, sister, nieces, nephews, many friends and extended family members, and “his brothers and sisters in blue,” according to his obituary.
“Our most heartfelt condolences, thoughts and prayers are with his wife, children, and the entire Calvin family,” the SPD said.
Officer Calvin was laid to rest on Wednesday.
