Hero Down: SAISD Det. Cliff Martinez Murdered While Breaking Up Disturbance

San Antonio ISDPD Detective Cliff Martinez was intentionally struck by a vehicle early Saturday morning.

San Antonio, TX – San Antonio Independent School District Police Department (ISDPD) Detective Cliff Martinez was murdered in the line of duty on Saturday, when he was intentionally struck by a vehicle while breaking up a fight.

The 50-year-old detective was working an off-duty security job at an IHOP restaurant in the 700-block of Hot Wells Road when a fight broke out inside the restaurant at approximately 3 a.m., KENS reported.

After Det. Martinez got the suspects out of the business, at least two of them attacked him, knocking him to the ground.

The suspects then jumped into a vehicle and intentionally ran over the injured detective, leaving him pinned beneath the car, the San Antonio Express-News reported.

The suspects fled the scene on foot.

Det. Martinez, a 28-year veteran-of-the-force, was wearing his radio at the time of the assault, and managed to call for help, WOAI reported.

He died of his injuries at the scene, according to the San Antonio Express-News.

The suspects responsible for the deadly attack have been identified as 29-year-old Alfredo Martinez and 23-year-old Jorge Lopez, KSAT reported.

Lopez was allegedly behind the wheel of the vehicle that ran over Det. Martinez.

Both have been arrested on capital murder charges.

“This was a case where people were anxious to provide officers with information when we arrived there and that led to the arrest of this suspect,” San Antonio Police Officer Doug Green said, according to WOAI. “He was doing his due diligence, and unfortunately it cost him his life.”

An IHOP San Antonio spokesperson said that Det. Martinez had been employed as a security officer for the restaurant for many years, KSAT reported.

“The entire IHOP family joins the San Antonio community in mourning the tragic loss of Detective Cliff Martinez,” IHOP San Antonio franchisee Hakim Group said in a statement. “He will forever be remembered for his care and dedication to protecting others and our thoughts are with the Martinez family during this heartbreaking time.”

The company has also vowed to match up to $30,000 in donations made to a fundraising campaign established to help the family of the murdered detective.

The San Antonio Independent School District (ISD) said that Det. Martinez was a “highly-respected member” of the district’s police force.

“SAISD is deeply saddened to learn of the death of our Detective Cliff Martinez early this morning while working off-duty at an I-HOP,” the school district said, according to KENS. “He will be greatly missed. Our thoughts are with his family and friends during this difficult time.”

In addition to his 28 years of service with the ISDPD, Det. Martinez also previously served with the Bexar County Sheriff’s Office, according to the Officer Down Memorial Page.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the family of San Antonio Independent School District Police Department Detective Cliff Martinez, both blood and blue. Thank you for your service.

Detective Cliff Martinez, your life mattered.
