Hero Down: Saint Marys Police Officer Mark Lamberson Dies Unexpectedly While On-Duty

Saint Marys, KS – Saint Marys Police Department (SMPD) Officer Mark Lamberson died unexpectedly while on duty on July 2, according to his department.

The Pottawatomie County Sheriff’s Office (PCSO) said it was called to an incident at Mt. Calvary Cemetery shortly after 4 p.m. on Saturday, WIBW reported.

No further details were released.

The Kansas Bureau of Investigation (KBI), which is handling the investigation into Officer Lamberson’s death, said no foul play is suspected, KSNT reported.

SMPD Chief Derek Cid confirmed Officer Lamberson’s death in a press release on July 3.

“Officer Mark Lamberson with the Saint Marys Police Department unexpectedly passed away while on duty on July 2, 2022,” Chief Cid said. “The loss of Officer Lamberson is tragic for all who knew, worked [with], and loved him.”

The chief said the PCSO would be covering calls for service within the city for the next several days in order to give “the family and members of the Department time to mourn his loss privately.”

Officer Lamberson served the PCSO as a jail deputy prior to joining the SMPD in 2013.

Chief Cid described him as “a long-time valued member” of the department.

More than 170 people offered their condolences on the SMPD’s Facebook page in response to Chief Cid’s announcement.

“We mourn the loss of Officer Mark Lamberson and stand with his family and fellow Saint Marys officers,” the Wamego Police Department wrote. “Rest easy, Mark. We will take it from here.”

“We’re sorry for Police Lamberson’s unexpectedly passing,” another message read. “We have been praying and continue to pray for him, family and the St. Mary’s Police Department. May he rest in peace.”

Officer Lamberson leaves behind his wife, children, and his parents, according to Chief Cid.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the family of Saint Marys Police Department Officer Mark Lamberson, both blood and blue. Thank you for your service.

Rest easy, hero. We’ll hold the line from here.
