Ridgeland, MS – Ridgeland Police Department (RPD) Sergeant Raymond “Ray” Daniels died unexpectedly at his home on July 10, according to his department.
The 43-year-old sergeant’s exact cause of death was not released.
“Sergeant Daniels served his community with honor, dedication, and selflessness for more than 20 years,” RPD Chief Brian Myers told WLBT. “Sgt. Daniels was instrumental in training, instructing, and leading a generation of police officers in our city as a patrolman, interdiction officer, training officer, supervisor, swat operator, coworker, and beloved friend.”
Sgt. Daniels served with the Cleveland Police Department (CPD) in Mississippi, the Bolivar County Emergency Operations Center, and his local volunteer fire department prior to joining the RPD 16 years ago, according to his obituary.
He spent most of his time with the RPD working as an interdiction officer alongside his partner, K9 Canon.
Sgt. Daniels became a training officer shortly after K9 Canon’s death in 2016, but returned to patrol as a supervisor in 2020.
“Across a 20-year career history, Ray’s passion for serving others through law enforcement was undeniable,” his obituary read. “Those who worked with him and for him describe him as a wonderful leader and trusted friend to many.”
“As a K9 handler, he set the bar for community policing and purposeful engagement. As an instructor, he stabilized the training program – developing and leading the next generation of police officers for Ridgeland. As a supervisor, he led from the front – with empathy and integrity,” his family said.
“Ray’s impact and service to the city and its police department will forever be enshrined in those he served and those he served with, especially the men and women who will continue to carry his legacy,” his obituary read.
Above all, Sgt. Daniels “loved his family fiercely,” according to the tribute.
He leaves behind his wife, Kristy, and his children, 15-year-old Lauren and 10-year-old Jacob.
Sgt. Daniels is also survived by his parents, sister, niece, uncles, in-laws, and his godson.
He was laid to rest on July 14.
