Carmel, NY – Putnam County Sheriff’s Department (PCSD) Special Patrol Officer Timothy Stewart died on Jan. 30 after suffering an unexpected illness.
Officer Stewart’s exact cause of death was not immediately released.
He devoted more than three decades of his life to his law enforcement career.
The PCSD confirmed the longtime officer’s death in a press release on Feb. 1.
“It is with a profound sense of sorrow and sadness that we announce the passing of our Special Patrol Officer Timothy J. Stewart, who passed away on January 30, 2023,” the department said.
Officer Stewart served 29 years with the New York Police Department (NYPD) before retiring in 2019 at the rank of detective.
“During his years of service with NYPD, Detective Stewart was described as a ‘team leader, a go-to-guy, super calm and levelheaded,’” the PCSD said. “We can say that we saw those characteristics in Tim as well.”
He was assigned to the Putnam County Office Building at the time of his death.
“SPO Stewart leaves behind a legacy of public service to others and a welcoming hello to all he encountered,” the sheriff’s department said. “Tim was stationed at the County Office Building and was a man with a warm smile and words of welcome to all.”
The agency said Officer Stewart’s smile will be missed by everyone who knew him.
Officer Stewart leaves behind his wife, Toni, and his young son, Aidan.
A fundraising campaign established to help his family in the wake of their loss has raised more than $12,000 so far.
Officer Stewart was laid to rest on Feb. 3.
