Petersburg, VA – Petersburg Bureau of Police (PBP) K9 Maverick died unexpectedly on April 19, according to his department.
The PBP announced the longtime police dog’s death in a press release the following day.
“It is with great sadness that the Petersburg Bureau of Police announces the untimely passing of Police K-9 ‘Maverick,’” the department said. “Maverick was the faithful partner of Officer Myron Green.”
K9 Maverick’s exact cause of death was not released.
The ordnance and weapons detection K9 joined the PBP in 2014.
He spent the next nine years of his life serving his community.
“Throughout his career, Maverick was successful in locating weapons and assisting with clearing buildings and schools, keeping our citizens safe,” the PBP said.
“Prayers for his partner, his family, and our agency,” the department added.
Nearly two dozen people offered their condolences to the PBP and Officer Green in response to the department’s announcement.
“So heartbreaking to hear of the loss of another K9 hero, K9 Maverick. You will be remembered always as a faithful and trusted partner to your handler, Officer Green,” one message read. “Prayers for Officer Green, his family and department.”
“Prayers for Maverick and all the people he shared his life with, especially his human partner,” another person wrote.
