Hero Down: Peekskill PD Officer Gregory Jones Dies Unexpectedly Thanksgiving Night

Peekskill, NY – Peekskill Police Department (PPD) Officer Gregory “Jonzee” Jones died unexpectedly on Thanksgiving night.

The 48-year-old officer volunteered his assistance during a community Thanksgiving dinner just before he passed away, News 12 reported.

His exact cause of death was not released.

The PPD confirmed the veteran officer’s death in a press release on Nov. 26.

“This is by far the most difficult news we have ever had to deliver,” the department said. “It is with great sadness and very heavy hearts that we announce the untimely passing of our brother, Police Officer Gregory Jones, Shield #15.”

Officer Jones devoted 24 years to his law enforcement career, serving as a school resource officer, D.A.R.E. instructor, community resource officer, and as a “devout member” of the agency’s community policing unit.

The PPD described him as a “pillar of the Peekskill Community.”

“Loved by all, P.O. Jones will forever be remembered for his infectious, trademark smile, passion for helping others and his dedication to the community’s youth population,” the police department said. “Above and beyond all, Greg Jones was a great friend who had a gift for putting a smile on your face and lifting your spirits.”

Officer Jones earned a bachelors degree in criminal justice from St. Thomas Aquinas College prior to becoming a police officer, according to his obituary.

“He began his law enforcement career at Orange County Sheriff’s Office working in the Mount Hope and Washingtonville Police Departments, then transferred to the City of Peekskill Police Department, where he proudly served for 22 years,” the tribute read.

Officer Jones also worked very closely with the Peekskill Fire Department (PFD), and was commonly referred to as an “honorary PFD-Local 2343 member,” according to his obituary.

He was extremely devoted to his community, and generally attended or assisted in any community event that was held.

“Our hearts, prayers, and condolences go out to the friends and family of P.O. Jones,” the PPD said. “Kindly know that your blue family is here to listen, comfort, and support you during this difficult time.”

“Rest peacefully, Jonzee… rest peacefully and comfortably knowing that we will carry your legacy and continue your work of bringing the Peekskill community together,” the department added. “Thank you for your service. Forever in our hearts.”

Officer Jones leaves behind his wife, fellow PPD Police Officer Mary Greenan, and six children ranging in age from 24 to one year old, according to his obituary.

He is also survived by his mother, uncles, aunts, cousins, nieces, nephews, in-laws, and his brothers and sisters at the PPD and the PFD.

Officer Jones was laid to rest on Dec. 1.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the family of Peekskill Police Department Officer Gregory “Jonzee” Jones, both blood and blue. Thank you for your service.

Rest easy, hero. We’ll hold the line from here.
