Hero Down: Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office Lieutenant Daniel Picciolo Dies Unexpectedly

Palm Beach, FL – Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office (PBSO) Lieutenant Daniel Picciolo died unexpectedly on April 14.

The 50-year-old lieutenant’s exact cause of death was not immediately released.

“It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Lieutenant Daniel Picciolo, District 7 Executive Officer,” the PBSO said in a press release two days later.

Lt. Picciolo “served our country proudly as a United States Marine” prior to beginning his law enforcement career at the Fort Lauderdale Police Department (FLPD), according to the sheriff’s office.

He was chosen for multiple special assignments during his time working in Broward County, to include being a member of the Special Problems Unit, according to his profile on the PBSO’s website.

Lt. Picciolo was hired by the PBSO in 1994, the department said.

He initially served in the northern section of the county before later taking on additional responsibilities as a SWAT-Hostage Negotiation squad leader and training coordinator, a member of the Emergency Field Forces, and as an agent with the Tactical Unit.

Lt. Picciolo expressed a desire to serve as a supervisor and was promoted to the rank of sergeant in 2005.

He was later assigned to Palm Beach International Airport, where he focused his attention on homeland security.

“Working at the airport gave a global view of the importance of intra/inter communications [with] TSA, FBI, Secret Service etc. and the overview safety and security for citizens from all over the country,” the PBSO noted.

The longtime lawman was promoted to the rank of lieutenant in 2012.

He served as a watch commander for Road Patrol Operations before moving into an admirative role as the commander of the City of Pahokee and the executive officer for Belle Glade and South Bay.

Lt. Picciolo was the executive officer for District 7 – West Boca Raton at the time of his death.

“Please keep his wife, Jennifer, his family and District 7 personnel in your thoughts and prayers during this difficult time,” the PBSO said.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the family of Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office Lieutenant Daniel Picciolo, both blood and blue. Thank you for your service.

Rest easy, hero. We’ll hold the line from here.
