Spotsylvania County, VA – Orange County Sheriff’s Office (OCSO) Deputy John “JB” Berry died unexpectedly on Sept. 16, according to his department.
The 54-year-old deputy was off-duty at his home when he passed away, the OCSO said in a press release later that day.
His exact cause of death was not immediately released.
“It is with profound sadness and a heavy heart that we announce the passing of Orange County Deputy John Berry,” the OCSO said. “Deputy Berry passed away unexpectedly this morning at his home.”
Deputy Berry served in the United States Navy prior to joining the sheriff’s office in May of 2011, according to his obituary.
He worked as a patrol deputy, patrol sergeant, and as an investigator during his 11-year law enforcement career, and was assigned to the Civil Process Unit at the time of his death.
“John was one of the most selfless and caring individuals you have ever met and would always lend a hand to someone in need,” the tribute read.
Hundreds of people offered their condolences to the OCSO and Deputy Berry’s family in response to the department’s Facebook announcement regarding his tragic death.
“John will be remembered for many years by his friends, family, and everyone who was graced to have known him. We owe him that much at the very least,” one message read. “The good Lord has gained a very great man.”
“So very, very sad to learn of this!” another person wrote. “He was the deputy who responded to my house when I found my late husband dead on the floor early one morning. I will never forget his kindness at that horrible time in my life. He was so gentle and reassuring. Rest in peace, Deputy. You and your family are in my prayers.”
Deputy Berry leaves behind his wife, Christina, his sons, Jonathon and William, and his granddaughter, Aryanna.
He is also survived by his in-laws, siblings, aunt, cousin, his OCSO family and his local community, according to his obituary.
“Please join us in sending condolences and prayers to John’s family and friends,” the sheriff’s office said. “Rest in Peace JB.”
