Clinton, NC – Newton Grove Police Department (NGPD) Officer Brent Nelson Hall died in a single-vehicle crash while off-duty on April 3.
The collision occurred near the intersection of Isaac Weeks Road and U.S. 701 at approximately 7 p.m., WTVD reported.
According to the North Carolina Highway Patrol (NCHP), the 26-year-old officer was traveling “at an extremely high rate of speed” when he lost control of his vehicle.
Officer Hall’s vehicle ran into a curb and slammed into two light poles, resulting in his death, WTVD reported.
Investigators said he was traveling more than 80 miles per hour in a 35-mile-per-hour zone at the time of the collision.
“Please pray for our Newton Grove Police Department, the Town of Newton Grove, and their families,” NGPD Chief Greg Warren said in a press release on Saturday evening. “We have lost one of our officers tonight in an accident.”
The Town of Newton Grove said in a Facebook post that Officer Hall’s death has been “devastating.”
“He was more than just an officer of the Newton Grove Police Department,” the post read. “He was a son, a brother, an uncle, and a friend.”
Officer Hall joined the NGPD in 2015, according to his obituary.
“He loved to serve others, had a tender heart and loved anything dealing with the youth and had a soft spot for animals,” the tribute read. “He was well liked in the community where he served and loved his brothers and sisters in blue.”
Officer Hall leaves behind his parents, sister, niece, grandparents, and many friends and extended family members.
A fundraiser established to help his family in the wake of their loss has raised over $11,300 so far.
Officer Hall will be laid to rest on Friday, according to his obituary.
