Hero Down: Newington Police Officer Alan ‘Tank’ Tancreti Dies After Suffering Medical Emergency

North Haven, CT – Newington Police Department (NPD) Officer Alan “Tank” Tancreti died on Oct. 1 after suffering a medical emergency while off-duty.

The 49-year-old officer suffered “an unexpected medical emergency” while off-duty at his North Haven home, the NPD Sergeant Ryan Deane said in a press release on Oct. 3.

“Despite the valiant efforts of first responders and medical staff Officer Tancreti passed away,” Sgt. Deane wrote. “Words can not express the tremendous loss our family feels after losing Alan.”

Officer Tancreti’s exact cause of death was not immediately released.

Prior to his career in law enforcement, Officer Tancreti spent many years working as a teacher at North Haven Middle School, according to his obituary.

“His quick wit in the classroom and love of US History will be remembered by all he taught and then some,” the tribute read.

Officer Tancreti joined the NPD seven years ago.

“’Tank’ as he was [affectionately] known throughout the department was ambitious, caring, supportive, and a great compliment to an amazing group of professionals,” Sgt. Deane said. “Alan above all else was a dedicated father to his three children.”

In addition to his law enforcement career, Officer Tancreti was also a longtime hockey player, coach, and referee, according to his obituary.

“Alan will be best remembered for his storytelling, and sharing his many ‘Dad Jokes’ with friends and family,” the tribute read. “He will be greatly missed by all who knew him, and his legacy will live on through his three children.”

Officer Tancreti leaves behind his son, Alan, and his daughters, Catherine and Julia.

He is also survived by his parents, his sister, and his former wife.

Officer Tancreti was laid to rest on Oct. 7.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the families of Newington Police Department Officer Alan “Tank” Tancreti, both blood and blue. Thank you for your service.

Rest easy, hero. We’ll hold the line from here.
