Holly MatkinBrooklyn, NY – New York City Department of Homeless Services Police Department (NYCDHSPD) Officer Theresa Gregg died on May 13 after she was repeatedly stabbed inside her home.
The 37-year-old off-duty officer’s body was found at approximately 8:22 a.m. inside her apartment above a grocery store located at 356 Bedford Avenue, AM New York Metro reported.
Police were called to the scene by Officer Gregg’s twin 14-year-old daughters, according to the New York Daily News.
The girls later told investigators their mother and her 35-year-old live-in boyfriend had been arguing inside their bedroom for hours the night before.
When they awoke the next day, they found their mother’s blood-covered body lying face down on the floor between her bedroom door and her bed, the New York Daily News reported.
The teens immediately called 911 and were instructed to roll their mother to her back and to begin CPR, according to the news outlet.
The girls desperately tried to save her, as did the emergency medical personnel who arrived a short while later, but Officer Gregg was pronounced dead at the scene at 8:45 a.m., the New York Daily News reported.
Officer Gregg suffered stab wounds to both sides of her neck, her left arm, and her upper body, according to the news outlet.
She also appeared to have been hit in her head and face, the New York Daily News reported.
A bloody screwdriver was found lying beside her body, according to the paper.
Sources said Officer Gregg was two or three months pregnant when she was murdered, the New York Daily News reported.
Her body was transported to the medical examiner’s office for autopsy, according to AM New York Metro.
Police did not officially name the slain officer’s boyfriend as a suspect.
No arrests have been made, and the investigation remains ongoing, AM New York Metro reported.
“This is an absolutely heartbreaking tragedy and our deepest condolences go out to officer Theresa Gregg’s family, friends, colleagues and close ones,” the NYCDHSPD said in a statement to WABC. “We are ever grateful for Officer Gregg’s invaluable contributions and tireless dedication to serving and supporting vulnerable New Yorkers and ensuring a safe environment for them.”
“This is a tremendous loss for the agency and our city. We stand ready to support Officer Gregg’s family during this difficult time every which way we can,” the agency added.
Officer Gregg’s former coworker, Karensa Landrum, told the New York Daily News the fallen officer was someone who people were drawn to.
“Everybody loved her… She was a real sweet, kind person,” Landrum said. “She was so friendly with everybody… I just hope they find [her killer]. It’s heartbreaking for that to happen to anybody, but for her I was just shocked.”
Teamsters Local 237 President Gregory Floyd also released a statement in the wake of Officer Gregg’s murder, the New York Daily News reported.
“She will be missed and we hope her assailant will be caught and brought to justice soon,” Floyd said.
