Las Vegas, NV – State of Nevada Department of Public Health and Human Services (DPHHS) Forensic Specialist II Patrick “Pat” Custodio Mercado died unexpectedly on Sept. 13.
The 45-year-old forensic specialist was off-duty at his home when he suddenly collapsed while walking down his stairs, according to a fundraising page established to help his family in the wake of their loss.
He was rushed to St. Rose Hospital, where the healthcare team “tirelessly tried their best to save him” for 45 minutes.
“But God knew it was his time,” the fundraising page read.
Specialist Mercado was born and raised in the Philippines and moved to the United States as a teenager.
He was living in California when he met his future wife, Marigold.
The couple relocated to Nevada in September of 2007.
Specialist Mercado served as a corrections officer with the Nevada Department of Corrections (NDOC) for several years before he joined the DPHHS as a forensic specialist, Corrections Officer Ron Viernes told The Police Tribune.
Specialist Mercado and Marigold celebrated their 13th wedding anniversary just five days before his sudden death, according to the fundraising page.
He also leaves behind his seven-year-old son, Xabi, as well as many friends and extended family members.
“Patrick Mercado was a son, brother, uncle, friend, beloved husband and father who touched the lives of those around him,” the tribute read. “He was a brother in blue. And he will be deeply missed by many…”
