Hero Down: Mount Vernon PD Officer Ivan Mauricio Lopez Killed In Crash While Driving Home From Work

Summerdale, AL – Mount Vernon Police Department (MVPD) Officer Ivan Mauricio Lopez was killed in the line of duty on Aug. 22 after a driver ran a stop sign and slammed into his patrol vehicle, according to police.

The fatal collision occurred at the intersection of Baldwin County Road 36 and Highway 59 at approximately 7:30 p.m., WALA reported.

Summerdale Police Chief Kevin Brock said the driver of a pickup truck was traveling at a “ridiculous speed” when he barreled through a stop sign and crashed into the 50-year-old officer’s vehicle.

The occupants of the truck were rushed to the hospital in unknown condition, WALA reported.

Officer Lopez was killed instantly in the violent collision, according to the Officer Down Memorial Page.

The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency’s (ALEA) Highway Patrol Division and the Summerdale Police Department (SPD) are handling the ongoing investigation, WALA reported.

MVPD Chief C. Duncan Herrington announced Officer Lopez’s death in a statement on Aug. 23.

The chief said the 12-year department veteran was heading home at the end of his shift when he was killed, WALA reported.

“He loved the community and the community loved him,” Chief Herrington said. “Officer Lopez will not be able to be replaced due to his efforts to make Mount Vernon Police Department better for our citizens. His love of people was evident and his heart of service was extraordinary!”

“I again want to thank the community and surrounding areas for their condolences, thoughts and prayers. We never heal from these situations, we simply have to learn a new way to live,” the chief continued. “Officer Lopez embodied what it meant to be a social service worker with a heart for people and animals. Therefore, if I could express anything positive out of this tragedy, it would be to learn from the example Officer Lopez set by his love of others.”

Officer Lopez, who devoted 20 years of his life to his law enforcement career, leaves behind his wife and three daughters, WEAR reported.

He was laid to rest on Aug. 27.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the families of Mount Vernon Police Department (MVPD) Officer Ivan Mauricio Lopez, both blood and blue. Thank you for your service.

Rest easy, hero. We’ll hold the line from here.
