Hero Down: Massachusetts State Police K9 Maura Succumbs To Medical Condition

Boston, MA – Massachusetts State Police (MSP) K9 Maura died on Oct. 7 after recently developing a severe medical issue.

The 13-year-old German Shepherd fell ill shortly before she succumbed to her medical condition late last week, the MSP said in a Facebook post.

Details regarding her exact cause of death were not released.

K9 Maura, an explosives detection K9, served alongside her human partner, MSP Sergeant Neil Calnan, in the agency’s Fire Marshal’s Office.

The duo was part of the State Police Bomb Squad and also responded to help secure the Boston Marathon bombing scene on Apr. 15, 2013.

“[K9 Maura] worked to maximize the public’s safety at many specialized security operations throughout Massachusetts across the years,” the MSP said. “Maura’s exceptional dedication and work ethic were noted and admired by all who worked with her.”

K9 Maura’s primary mission during her 12 years of service with the MSP was to help protect the hundreds of millions of travelers who passed through Logan Airport during her tenure.

“Maura served the citizens of our state and beyond with exemplary dedication, courage, and loyalty,” the MSP said. “She was a great dog, a loyal partner, and a beloved member of the Massachusetts State Police and Calnan families.

“Thank you for your service Maura,” the agency’s post read. “Only green fields to run, now, and play time and peace always.”

Our thoughts and prayers are with the Massachusetts State Police and Sgt. Calnan in the loss of K9 Maura.
