Hero Down: Marietta Police Department Major Steve Campisi Dies Unexpectedly

Marietta, GA – Marietta Police Department (MPD) Major Steve Campisi died unexpectedly on July 20, according to his department.

“It is with heavy heart and deep sadness that we share the unexpected loss of Major Steve Campisi,” the MPD said in a Facebook post later that night.

Details regarding the veteran officer’s exact cause of death were not released.

Maj. Campisi, 50, served the MPD for 26 years.

He was awarded the Alex Newsome Supervisor of the Year award in 2012, and was the recipient of the Difference Maker Award at least twice during his years of service, WXIA reported.

Maj. Campisi served in Uniform Patrol, Support Services, Investigative Services, the Office of Professional Standards, and Community Outreach during his career, according to the Marietta Daily Journal.

He also held a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice and a masters degree in public administration.

“Major Campisi had an infectious smile, laugh and charm…excitedly welcoming new officers assigned to Morning Watch; his favorite shift,” the department said. “RIP Brother, we have the watch from here.”

Sheila McPhilamy, organizer of a fundraising campaign established to help the major’s family in the wake of their loss, said Maj. Campisi’s death has crushed the hearts of those who knew him.

“His outstanding service and accomplishments left lasting positive [effects] on those all around him,” McPhilamy wrote. “All too often we take for granted the sacrifices our officers make and the toll it takes on their lives. Let’s not forget the sacrifices this officer has made.”

Maj. Campisi leaves behind his wife and three sons.

Donors have contributed over $41,000 to the family so far.

Maj. Campisi will be laid to rest on Monday, WXIA reported.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the family of Marietta Police Department Major Steve Campisi, both blood and blue. Thank you for your service.

Rest easy, hero. We’ll hold the line from here.
